There are an increasing number of Children with Special Health Care Needs (CSHCN) in community settings. These children are often referred to as medically fragile or technology-assisted. Due to their chronic health conditions, they may require specialized equipment such as tracheostomy tubes, central venous lines, feeding tubes, etc. They may have conditions that make them susceptible to medical emergencies which may require access to the EMS system on a regular basis. When a CSHCN is injured, the injuries may be complicated by the child’s underlying conditions. Because of the special circumstances with which these children present and the greater likelihood of EMS utilization, these children represent a unique challenge to the EMS provider.

The EMS for Children (EMSC) program recommends that every EMS agency adopt CSHCN protocols. State-recommended guidelines are available. EMS providers may desire additional instruction in the underlying conditions and treatment recommendations for these children. Following are some resources to help EMS providers learn more about Children with Special Health Care Needs.
