There are an increasing number of Children with Special Health Care Needs (CSHCN) in community settings. These children are often referred to as medically fragile or technology-assisted. They may have special equipment or unique conditions making them susceptible to medical emergencies. Because of the special circumstances with which these children present and the greater likelihood of EMS utilization, these children represent a unique challenge to the EMS provider.

A new educational opportunity is available for EMS providers interested in learning more about CSHCN: SCOPE (Special Children’s Outreach and Prehospital Education). The goal of SCOPE is to teach emergency professionals how to safely and effectively care for CSHCN who are acutely ill or traumatically injured.

If you are interested in SCOPE training or becoming a SCOPE instructor, contact the EMSC program at 800-233-0785 EMSC@dps.state.oh.us
