EMS & Fire Certifications

To renew any EMS instructor certificate, all EMS instructors must:

• Submit a completed renewal application on or before the expiration date of the current certificate
• Meet all standards for the applicable certificate to teach

Additional requirements are listed below.

EMS Instructor

• Provide minimum hours of EMS instruction during the preceding certification cycle
• Satisfy one of the following:
• Meet continuing education (instructional CE) requirements during the preceding certification cycle OR
• Successfully complete the instructional methods examination
• Compliant with OAC 4765-8-01 (A)(6) to (A)(12)

Assistant EMS or EMS Continuing Education Instructor

• Meet minimum EMS instruction and continuing education (instructional CE) requirements during the preceding certification cycle
• Compliant with OAC 4765-8-01 (A)(6) to (A)(12)

Physician EMS or Continuing Education Instructor

• Meet standards for a certificate to teach in compliance with OAC 4765-18-09

To renew any fire service provider certificate, all fire service providers must:

• Complete continuing education requirements, based on the length of certification cycle, as set forth in rule 4765-20-16 of the Ohio Administrative Code; and
• Satisfy the requirements for the applicable certificate as set forth in the Ohio Administrative Code; and
• Submit a completed renewal application on or before the expiration date of the current certificate.

To renew a fire instructor, assistant fire instructor or fire safety inspector instructor certificate, all fire service instructors must:

• Submit a completed renewal application on or before the expiration date of the current certificate;
• Comply with the requirements for a firefighter certificate as set forth in the Ohio Administrative Code;
• During the preceding certification cycle has provided the required hours of instruction as approved by the applicant’s fire chief or the program director of an Ohio chartered fire training program.

Fire Instuctor

• Possess a current and valid firefighter certificate that is in good standing.
• Complete continuing education requirements, based on the length of certification cycle OR successfully pass an instructional methods examination as set forth in rule 4765-20-06 of the Ohio Administrative Code.

Assistant Fire Instuctor

• Possess a current and valid firefighter certificate that is in good standing.
• Complete continuing education requirements, based on the length of certification cycle.

Fire Safety Inspector Instuctor

• Possess a current and valid fire safety inspector certificate that is in good standing;
• Complete continuing education requirements, based on the length of certification cycle OR successfully pass an instructional methods examination as set forth in rule 4765-20-06 of the Ohio Administrative Code.

Live Fire Instuctor

To renew a live fire instructor certificate, applicants must:

• Possess a current and valid Live Fire Instructor certificate that is in good standing;
• Possess a current and valid Firefighter I or Firefighter II certificate that is in good standing;
• Possess a current and valid Fire Instructor or Assistant Fire Instructor certificate that is in good standing;
• Comply with the requirements for a firefighter as set forth in the Ohio Administrative Code;
• During the preceding certification cycle, have participated as a certified instructor in at least one live burn training exercise approved by the applicant’s fire chief or program director of an Ohio chartered fire training program;
• Submit a completed renewal application on or before the expiration date of the current certificate;

NOTE: If “NFPA 1403, Standard on Live Fire Training Evolutions” is revised during the certificate holder’s certification cycle, a live fire instructor shall attend a continuing education refresher course related to the revised standard.
