Become a Subject Matter Expert

The Division of EMS is seeking subject matter experts (SME) from all areas of the fire service who are willing to provide assistance in reviewing and approving test questions from the textbooks and approved reference materials. Content reviewers are state experts in a specific fire service subject or topic. Reviewers come from firefighter training academies, colleges, universities, firefighter agencies, or other fire service professional entities.

Subject Matter Expert

As a subject matter expert, you play a key role in evaluating test items: developing and validating the items and anticipating their level of difficulty. Participation will include attendance at SME meetings, providing requested information, and/or electronically reviewing/revising work product in a timely manner. SMEs are not employees of the Ohio Department of Public Safety, Division of Emergency Medical Services, and will participate as non-paid, volunteer professionals.

SMEs will receive training on the validation process and responsibility as a subject matter expert upon approval. SME must have an understanding of the following:

  • Materials
  • Examinees
  • Mapping objectives
  • Anticipate scoring
  • Validate and interpret items

To apply, complete the application and upload:

  1. A resume that demonstrates your qualification to be a SME (includes education, training, and teaching experience).
  2. Letter(s) of recommendation from an approved Ohio fire charter attesting to the reviewer’s instructor experience and specific areas of expertise.
